Our approach to science

There are plenty of supplement companies out there. You’ve probably used a few, maybe you’ve got a go-to brand that you keep returning to. Maybe you’re on the look out for a new one… Which begs the question, what separates a good, or maybe an AWESOME supplement company from the rest?

For us it hinges on 3 key things when we look at the science of supplements:

Using real, multi trial, human based studies when deciding on which ingredients to use in a product
Then, using the dose that is proven to be optimal for the effect its reported to have
And lastly, to utilise the most effective carrier agent / chelate to maximise absorption in the gut

Does the supplement company you are currently using follow this approach?

Most supplement companies will claim things like “evidence based”, and while this is likely true, they will often not use human trials but rat trials to justify an ingredient's use. They then won’t put a compound's optimal dose in - instead they will opt for a ½ dose because that makes the product cheaper to make while still being able to make the label claims, and they will often opt for a cheap form of that compound or use a cheap carrier agent, because again it's cheaper to produce - but ends up in a far lower quality product.

That's why high quality supplements can cost significantly more than the average. You very much do get what you pay for.

As a simple example, lots of companies make a Turmeric product for joints, using turmeric at a dose of 1500mg will only cost a company around £2.10 to make, but the research shows the compound you actually want is Curcumin, the active ingredient found in Turmeric, which costs us just over £10 to produce, 4-5x what other companies are doing and trying to sell you.

That means it will often cost 2-3x more to buy, but it actually works in the way it’s supposed to. And you want your supplements to actually work, right?

Optimal doses

Then there are companies that put ingredients like creatine and beta alanine in a product like a pre-workout supplement. They do this as they are compounds with proven effects. Yet both these ingredients need to be taken every day to be effective, so while the company can make the label claim, and you’ll think the product is doing something, they are mis-selling you because these two ingredients, just as one example, should be in a different type of product that you take daily, to get the on-going effects of creatine and beta alanine, like in Awesome Power. They shouldn't be in a pre-workout product, they don’t work taken this infrequently, they must be taken daily.

When it comes to putting optimal doses in products, this is why our Awesome Defence has a serving size of 4 capsules, because you simply can’t make a high quality, optimally dosed multivitamin fit into a one a day capsule that covers literally EVERYTHING you need. It’s why our Awesome Joints is twice the price of many competitors and a 3 capsule serving size. It's why our pre-workout is such a big serving size, because of the volume of research dosed ingredients we put in it.

You can find examples of these shady practices everywhere, especially on the high streets. Take Holland and Barrett’s multivitamin, for example. It contains 400iu of vitamin D – one of the most commonly deficient micronutrients in the UK. Most of us would greatly benefit from supplementing with Vitamin D. Particularly in the winter months, when we are not exposed to enough sunlight for our bodies to naturally meet demands. The scientific consensus is that we should be getting 1000-4000iu per day for optimal health and function. Our Awesome Defence multivitamin and mineral supplement follows this evidence and provides 2500iu per serving, unlike H&B.

Clinically proven

We could go on, but we’ll be blunt in saying that most companies are either using poor rat studies to justify ingredient claims, under-dosing products to make them cheaper to make, or using carrier agents that have very poor absorption to make the product cheap to make - allowing them to constantly make big discounts to entice you to buy.

If you want to test this out for yourself. Grab the supplements in your cupboards right now and put the ingredients in them into this website www.examine.com which is an impartial supplement search engine. Here you can search if the ingredient in your product is the correct dose, and how effective it is. Then you can tell if the company you are buying from is putting research backed and research dosed ingredients into their products. Our promise to you is that all of our supplements are produced following up-to-date, evidence-dosed research, at the doses required to not only avoid deficiency, but to maximise your physical and mental potential, aka, the optimal dose.
