1. What collagen actually is (and what it actually does)

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It makes up around 30% of your total protein and forms the structural framework of skin, joints, tendons, ligaments, cartilage and bone.

It's not metabolically active in the way muscle is. It's structural. Think of it as the scaffolding that holds connective tissue together and gives it the mechanical properties (stretch, recoil, tensile strength) that let your body move and absorb load.

Which is why the standard "collagen for skin" framing sells the supplement short. Yes, collagen supports skin elasticity and hydration. But it also underpins:

2. Why collagen production declines over time

Two things converge to create the collagen gap most people develop in their 30s and beyond.

Natural decline. Endogenous collagen production drops by around 1% per year from your mid-20s onward. By the time you're 50, you're producing meaningfully less than you were at 25, and your existing collagen is also slowly degrading via wear and tear and oxidative stress.

Dietary shift. Modern diets are heavily skewed toward muscle meat (chicken breast, lean steak, fish fillets). Traditional diets included far more connective tissue, skin, bone broth, and slow-cooked cuts that delivered collagen-rich proteins. The amino acid profile of modern diets is high in muscle-building protein and low in connective tissue building blocks (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline).

Here's where collagen supplementation gets interesting, and where most products are using outdated thinking.

When you ingest collagen, it gets broken down in the gut into smaller chains called peptides. Standard hydrolysed collagen produces peptides typically 30-100 amino acids long. These are absorbed and largely broken down further into individual amino acids before circulating in the bloodstream.

Low molecular weight collagen, particularly tripeptides (three-amino-acid chains like Gly-Pro-Hyp and Pro-Hyp), behaves differently. Research by Iwai et al. and others has shown these specific peptides can be detected intact in the bloodstream within 1-2 hours of ingestion. They aren't just broken down to amino acids. They circulate as functional peptides.

Why this matters: these intact peptides appear to act as signalling molecules. They reach connective tissue and may directly trigger collagen synthesis in skin, joints and tendons. That's a fundamentally different mechanism to "adding more amino acids to the pool."

Yamamoto et al.'s 2016 comparison in the Journal of Functional Foods found that tripeptide-rich collagen produced significantly higher circulating peptide levels than standard collagen at matched doses. Same input weight, more functional output.

4. Dose vs delivery, and why both matter

If you scan the collagen market, you'll see dose competition. 5 grams. 10 grams. 15 grams. Bigger is presented as better. It isn't always.

Human studies using collagen tripeptides have shown improvements in joint comfort and function at doses around 2g per day over 5-10 weeks. Broader collagen peptide research using standard hydrolysed forms typically uses 2.5-10g per day over 8-12 weeks to show similar outcomes (Proksch et al., 2014; Clark et al., 2008).

Taken together, the research suggests that both dose and structure matter, but structure influences how efficiently a given dose is used. A well-formulated 2g of tripeptide-rich collagen can do more than a poorly formulated 10g of standard hydrolysed collagen.

5. Why collagen never works alone

Here's a quiet problem with most collagen products: they treat collagen as a single-input variable. Take more collagen, get more results. The biochemistry doesn't work that way.

Collagen synthesis is a multi-step process that requires several supporting nutrients. Without those cofactors, the collagen you take isn't fully utilised.

Vitamin C. The most critical cofactor. Vitamin C is required as a cofactor in the enzymatic processes that stabilise collagen fibres (the hydroxylation of proline and lysine). Individually, each of these does a specific job. Together, they support the environment that collagen depends on to actually function.

A collagen product without these cofactors is like giving someone building materials but no scaffolding to use them on. The material is there, but the assembly is impaired.

6. Collagen and training: the mechanical loading link

One of the more interesting areas of recent research looks at collagen in combination with exercise.

Connective tissue adapts to mechanical load the same way muscle does. Loading a tendon triggers cellular signalling that leads to collagen synthesis and remodelling. That's how tendons get stronger over time.

Shaw et al.'s 2017 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is the most cited piece of evidence on this. They had subjects take a gelatin-based collagen supplement plus vitamin C one hour before short bouts of jumping exercise. The result: measurably increased markers of collagen synthesis in connective tissue compared to placebo, particularly when the collagen was taken before the loading.

FAQs

How long until I see results from collagen?

Can I just eat bone broth?

If you're vegan and want collagen support, focus on adequate protein intake plus vitamin C, silicon and a varied amino acid profile.

Can I take collagen with my protein shake?

Yes, no interaction issues. Collagen is technically a low-quality protein on its own (incomplete amino acid profile, low leucine), so it shouldn't be counted toward your daily protein target the way whey or plant protein would be. But there's no reason not to take them together. Some people mix collagen into their morning protein shake or coffee for convenience.
