Replenishing lost fluid and electrolytes from prolonged exercise is crucial to avoid dehydration and to aid recovery. Whilst adding carbohydrates is a good idea for exercise lasting longer than 90 minutes to fuel muscular contractions, glucose actually slows the absorption of water, as described here. For exercise longer than 30 minutes, but less than 90 minutes, replenishing fluids lost through sweating and heavy breathing can be achieved with an electrolyte drink containing sodium and potassium. 

This small double-blind study shows that 10 days of magnesium supplementation can increase perceived recovery, decrease perceived muscle soreness and decrease rate of perceived exertion, demonstrating magnesium as a useful electrolyte for performance and recovery, hence we use it in our formula.
