Most assume that omega 6s are pro-inflammatory and omega 3s are anti-inflammatory, so focus just on Omega 3s. But it’s actually the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 that’s the problem. It’s not that omega 6 fats are bad per-se, it’s that we are not consuming enough anti-inflammatory omega 3s as a population. This study showed that increased omega 6s alone do not lead to increased inflammatory makers, but it’s shown here that an optimal Omega 6: Omega 3 ratio is 4:1 or lower - whereas most western diets are around 15:1. The solution? Increase your omega 3 intake and just keep an eye on omega 6s not being too high.

This study shows that raising your omega 3 index from 4% to 8%, by consuming up to 2g omega 3 fatty acids, can lower your risk of all cause mortality, and increase your life expectancy by 5 years. A similar dosage has been shown by Miller et al to improve high blood pressure even more effectively than other lifestyle interventions such as increased exercise or reduced sodium or alcohol consumption.

While the UK dietetic association recommends 450mg of DHA/EPA per day, research around optimal, rather than sufficiency dosing points to a more optimal dose being around 1000mg for general health, and 1-2000mg if you exercise a lot. Two capsules would cover you for general health benefits, and three capsules would be sufficient if you exercise regularly, at high intensity.

Most omega 3 fish oil products advertise their capsules at 1000mg, and while the size of the capsule might have the size/capacity for 1000mg, most tablets are far off 1000mg in their overall EPA and DHA dose.
